Music Library Association Best Practices for statement of responsibility relating to title proper

Prerecording

Prerecording

Routinely record the element. When performers are named alone or are named more prominently than composers, songwriters, etc. on the same source of information as the title proper, treat statements identifying these performers as a statement of responsibility relating to the title proper.

LC/PCC Core. For monographs, only the first recorded statement of responsibility is required. The element is not required for serials.

PCC practice: For rare materials, record in most cases all statements of responsibility relating to title proper appearing in the preferred source of information.

LC practice: For archival moving images, all or part of the statement of responsibility for the title proper may be taken from secondary sources; data is not bracketed unless it is considered to be probable or questionable. Sources used are given in a note.

Option

Generally do not record manifestation statements. Refer to the Best Practices for Guidance: Manifestation statements for details.

Recording

Recording

In MARC: Record as an unstructured description using field 245 subfield $c.

See examples in MARC format: statement of responsibility relating to title proper .

LC/PCC practice: Record the statement of responsibility relating to title proper from the following sources in order of preference:

  1. the same source as title proper
  2. another source within the manifestation itself
  3. one of the other sources of information specified in Guidance: Data provenance. Recording a source of metadata that is a manifestation being described.
Follow this order of preference even if a subsequent source of information contains a fuller statement of responsibility identifying the same agent performing the same role.

Condition Option

Apply the option. If feasible, transcribe all values for the element appearing on the chosen source of information.

Condition Option

Apply the option. If feasible, transcribe all values for the element appearing on the chosen source of information.

Optionally, record values appearing elsewhere in the resource (see Manifestation: statement of responsibility. Recording. Two or more statements of responsibility). For these purposes, do not consider attributions, etc., embedded in text to be statements of responsibility. If desired, give such attributions as a Manifestation: note on statement of responsibility. Statements of responsibility relating to title proper appearing anywhere in the resource may be transcribed without square brackets.

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.

Recording an unstructured description

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option when not all statements of responsibility appearing on the source or sources of information are being recorded.

Data provenance

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply this option if 1) the metadata has been taken from a source other than the manifestation being described and there is a requirement to record that source OR 2) if directed to do so by other LC/PCC documentation.

LC/PCC practice: For sources of information for transcription, see the instructions at Guidance: Data provenance: Recording a source of metadata that is a manifestation being described.
