Music Library Association Best Practices for name of publisher

Routinely record the element. Treat a trade name or brand name used by a publishing company (i.e., a “label” in the case of audio recordings) as a name of publisher.

If a trade name appears to be used as the name of a series rather than of an imprint or publishing subdivision, consult the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF) to see if a particular name has been established as a series, series-like phrase, or label name. In case of doubt, treat the name as a value of Manifestation: title of series.

For electronic resources, do not record the name of a resource provider or the title of a database package in this element or any related element. For additional guidance and examples refer to MLA RDA Metadata Guidance under Format-Specific Guidance.

Generally do not record manifestation statements. Refer to the Best Practices for Guidance: Manifestation statements for details.

In MARC: Record as an unstructured description using field 264 (second indicator 1) subfield $b.

If in doubt as to whether a presentation of two names in the same source represents a publishing company and a subdivision, trade name, or brand name of that same company, or whether the names represent two unrelated publishers, treat both names as separate publishers.
