Recording

Recording an unstructured description

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option. See the options at Guidance: Data provenance: Recording a source of metadata that is a manifestation that is being described.

Option

LC/PCC practice: For manuscripts, title of manifestation should come from the name of a physical manuscript. Do not apply the option IF: the only source for the name of the physical manuscript is the resource being cataloged and it presents variant forms of the name of manuscript. Instead, use these sources in this order of preference:

  1. the preferred source of information of the resource
  2. other prominent sources in the resource
  3. a form found elsewhere in the resource

LC/PCC practice: The name of the physical manuscript may change as new manifestations are published. Change the Work: authorized access point for work to match the new title of manifestation. The older title may be retained as a variant access point, according to Cataloger's judgment.

LC/PCC practice: For manuscripts, do not apply the option IF: the only source for the name of the physical manuscript is the resource being cataloged and it presents variant forms of the name of the repository. Instead, use these sources in this order of preference:

  1. the preferred source of information of the resource
  2. other prominent sources in the resource
  3. a form found elsewhere in the resource
  4. the form appearing most frequently in reference sources
Use the value of Corporate Body: authorized access point for corporate body for the current repository that holds the physical manuscript, if one exists. If no authorized access point for corporate body exists, use the form found on the resources being cataloged or in references sources.

LC practice: For archival moving image resources, title of manifestation should come from:

  1. main or end title
  2. interior titles
  3. soundtrack
  4. secondary sources

Titles of manifestation that include music information

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option if recording a Manifestation: title proper and the title information contains distinctive words or phrases in addition to a type of composition. Do not apply the option if the title information consists solely of one or more types of composition.

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option unless the title consists only of these elements of information. In case of doubt, consider them to be part of the title proper.

Titles of manifestation that include scale information

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option to the value of title proper.

Titles of manifestation of parts and iterations

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option.

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.

Titles of manifestations that are issued in parts

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: If the unit has its own description, but does not have a title or a distinctive title, apply the option to use the common title as the title of manifestation. If the unit has its own description and does have a distinctive title, record the common title as a related title of manifestation or as a title of monographic series. This applies to monographic series and multipart monographs that provide a full description of each unit, regardless of whether it is numbered or not.

PCC practice: Apply the option to monographic series and multipart monographs that provide a full description of each unit. IF: the title of a main series included in an existing authorized access point is no longer present on later issues or parts or the title of a main series not included in an existing authorized access point appears on later issues or parts, create a new description for the series work and link the two records with an earlier/later relationship. If the presence/absence of the title of manifestation of the main series continues to be inconsistent, do not create additional authority records for the series. Use the series authority record for the later series work and add information and variant access points as appropriate.
