LC/PCC practice: Apply the option. Choose a preferred form of name in this order of preference:

  1. an approved English-language form found in GNS (called a conventional name) or listed in the table given in the Metadata Guidance documents
  2. an approved form in GNS written in Latin script, or an approved form transliterated according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts for that language if there is no Latin script form given
  3. a form found in other English-language reference sources (e.g., Columbia Gazetteer of the World) when the place name is not found in GNS

Names found in a non-preferred script

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option. If the name of the place is in a language written in a non-Latin script, transliterate the name according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts for that language. If GNS contains an approved name that is transliterated using a different standard than the ALA-LC Romanization Table for that language, use the ALA-LC form of transliteration as the basis for the Place: authorized access point for place. Consider making a Place: variant access point for place for the BGN approved form.

Names that include a category of corporate body

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: If the category of corporate body is a term for type of jurisdiction, apply the option.

Data provenance

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply this option if 1) the metadata has been taken from a source other than the manifestation being described and there is a requirement to record that source OR 2) if directed to do so by other LC/PCC documentation.
