LC/PCC practice: Apply the option. Choose a preferred form of name in this order of preference:
- an approved English-language form found in GNS (called a conventional name) or listed in the table given in the Metadata Guidance documents
- an approved form in GNS written in Latin script, or an approved form transliterated according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts for that language if there is no Latin script form given
- a form found in other English-language reference sources (e.g., Columbia Gazetteer of the World) when the place name is not found in GNS
- a form found in the resource being cataloged, transliterated if appropriate

Names found in a non-preferred script

If the name of the place is in a language written in a non-Latin script, transliterate the name according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts for that language. If GNS contains an approved name that is transliterated using a different standard than the ALA-LC Romanization Table for that language, use the ALA-LC form of transliteration as the basis for the Place: authorized access point for place. Consider making a Place: variant access point for place for the BGN approved form.
Names that include a category of corporate body
