OLAC Best Practice for title proper

Prerecording

Prerecording

Always record a title proper.

Recording

Recording an unstructured description

Two or more titles of manifestation

Titles proper of manifestations of parts and iterations

Condition Option

Record the franchise title and the number and/or specific title as part of the title proper, adding a colon after the franchise title for clarity. Do not put a space in front of the colon. Only record a title as other title information if it is clearly secondary to the title information and is not necessary to distinguish the title from other titles in the franchise.

For determining the title proper for motion pictures and television programs with both a comprehensive title and individual title(s), consult LC-PCC MGD: Work: Access point for work: Constructing access points for works (Motion Pictures (including film and video formats) section). Record titles of parts, sections, and supplements as part of the title proper in addition to a common title if they are insufficient to identify the resource on their own.

Condition Option

Apply the option. Record titles of parts, sections, and supplements as title proper if they are sufficient to identify the resource. For additional guidance, see LC-PCC MGD: Work: Access point for work: Constructing access points for works (particularly sections on Motion Pictures, Television Programs, and Radio Programs).
