LC-PCC policy statements for access point for manifestation

Prerecording

Prerecording

LC/PCC practice: Record this element for manuscripts only. For all other manifestations, do not record the element.

Recording

Recording an unstructured description

Recording a structured description

Option

LC/PCC practice: For manuscripts, if an authorized form has been established in the LC/NACO Authority File, apply the option by recording that authorized form.

Option

LC/PCC practice: For manuscripts and manuscript groups, apply the option. Use the access point of the manifestation as the basis for Work: authorized access point for work and Manifestation: authorized access point for manifestation IF: 1. the preferred title for the work is the same as that of the physical manuscript; 2. the work has no known creator; AND 3. the manuscript does not contain a sacred or liturgical work.

LC/PCC practice: Select the access point for manifestation in this order of preference:

  1. the name of the physical manuscript;
  2. a devised title representing the repository designation for the physical manuscript.

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option IF: 1. the only source for the name of the physical manuscript is the resource being cataloged, AND 2. it presents variant forms of the name of manuscript. Use these sources in this order of preference:

  1. the preferred source of information,
  2. other prominent sources in the resource, or
  3. a form found elsewhere in the resource.

LC/PCC practice: For manuscripts, do not apply the option under these conditions: 1. If the only source for the name of the physical manuscript is the resource being cataloged AND 2. it presents variant forms of the name of the repository. Instead, use these sources in this order of preference:

  1. the preferred source of information,
  2. other prominent sources in the resource, or
  3. a form found elsewhere in the resource, or
  4. the form appearing most frequently in reference sources.
Use the value of Corporate Body: authorized access point for corporate body for the current repository that holds the physical manuscript, if one exists. If no authorized access point for corporate body exists, use the form found on the resources being cataloged or in references sources.

LC/PCC practice: If the physical manuscript has been divided into multiple physical parts, with the parts located in different repositories, construct a Manifestation: authorized access point for manifestation for each part separately using these instructions. Connect the access points as a Manifestation: related manifestation of manifestation.

Base access points for manifestation

Option

LC/PCC practice: If title of manifestation cannot be determined for a physical manuscription, use the values of Corporate Body: authorized access point for corporate body for the current repository that holds the physical manuscript, the term "Manuscript," and the repository designation of the manuscript to formulate the Manifestation: authorized access point for manifestation. If the physical manuscript no longer exists, use the value of the repository that last held it.

LC/PCC practice: If title of manifestation uses the name of the repository as the first value of the authorized access point, and

  • the name of the repository changes, or
  • the physical manuscript moves to a different repository, or
  • the repository designation changes,
change the Manifestation: authorized access point for manifestation to reflect current usage.

LC/PCC practice: If the authorized access point for manifestation is for a part of a physical manuscript named by a repository designation, add the foliation for the part.

To promote consistency among shared authority files, always create a metadata description for the Manifestation: authorized access point for manifestation of a physical manuscript. When the authorized access point for manifestation is the same as the authorized access point for work, establish a separate metadata description for the authorized access point for work only if it is necessary to catalog the resource in hand.

LC/PCC practice: In general, do not create a Manifestation: related work of manifestation or Manifestation: related expression of manifestation relationship between a metadata description for a physical manuscript and the work or expression contained in the physical manuscript.
