Music Library Association Best Practices for edition statement

Prerecording

Prerecording

Routinely record the element by recording one or more of the appropriate subelements.

For electronic resources, do not record the name of a resource provider or the title of a database package in this element or any related element. For additional guidance and examples refer to MLA RDA Metadata Guidance under Format-Specific Guidance.

Option

Generally do not record manifestation statements. Refer to the Best Practices for Guidance: Manifestation statements for details.

Recording

Recording

In MARC: Record as an unstructured description using field 250. Generally encode multiple instances of Manifestation: designation of edition and/or Manifestation: designation of named revision of edition in separate 250 fields. However, when a designation of a named revision is grammatically linked to a designation of edition, encode both in a single 250 field.

See examples in MARC format: edition statement . For related examples see also: designation of edition ; parallel designation of edition ; designation of named revision of edition ; statement of responsibility relating to edition ; parallel statement of responsibility relating to edition

Recording an unstructured description

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option. Prefer the manifestation as a source, with this order of preference:

  1. the same source as the title proper
  2. another source within the manifestation itself
  3. one of the other sources of information specified in Data provenance. Option on sources of information.

Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option.

Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option if considered important for identification or access. Supply the value in square brackets.

Edition statement relating to issues or parts

Condition Option

Apply the option. A common case in music is when a score, cataloged together with parts, bears the statement "Score" (or its equivalent). Do not treat such a statement as a designation of edition, as it does not apply to the entire resource.

Condition Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option.

Data provenance

Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.

Option

LC/PCC practice: Apply this option if 1) the metadata has been taken from a source other than the manifestation being described and there is a requirement to record that source OR 2) if directed to do so by other LC/PCC documentation.

Recording a structured description

Option

In MARC: Separate subelements that are recorded in the same MARC field by applying ISBD punctuation rules or the PCC Guidelines for Minimally Punctuated MARC.

LC/PCC practice: Apply the option.

Option

LC/PCC practice: Do not apply the option.
