LC-PCC policy statements for related manifestation of manifestation

Prerecording

Prerecording

LC/PCC Core for reproductions.

The word “reproduction” is being used in its broadest sense to include all resources formerly identified as reproductions, republications, reprints, reissues, facsimiles, etc., that still represent equivalent content between an original resource and a reproduction of that original. Revised editions represent different expressions and are not treated as reproductions.

LC/PCC practice: See the Metadata Guidance documentation: Basic Cataloging Decisions.

LC/PCC practice: See the Metadata Guidance documentation: Manifestation elements.

LC/PCC practice: See the Metadata Guidance documentation: Descriptive Relationship elements and Relationship labels.

Recording

Recording an unstructured description

Recording an unstructured description

LC/PCC practice: If the manifestation being described is an aggregate containing reproductions of individual manifestations not published together in an earlier aggregate, provide a Manifestation: note on manifestation about the individual manifestations according to judgment. A structured description is not required.

LC/PCC practice: If the reproduction is a facsimile of a manuscript and attributes pertaining to the original are not readily ascertainable, provide a Manifestation: note on manifestation with as much information that is available at hand. A structured description is not required.

LC/PCC practice: Optionally, apply the instruction using a note.

Recording a structured description

Recording a structured description

LC/PCC practice: If the manifestation being described is a reproduction, record a structured description as a value of Manifestation: reproduction of manifestation of for the original manifestation, unless a particular PCC program recommends the use of other relationships.

LC/PCC practice: If the manifestation being described is for an original serial, record a structured description as a value of Manifestation: reproduced as manifestation for the reproduced manifestations, unless a particular PCC program recommends the use of other relationships. Use cataloger's judgment in determing the number of relationships to provide for separate reproductions.

LC/PCC practice: Record the element using a structured description. If possible, express the relationship using a relationship label, or a relationship label in combination with an identifier or IRI, as allowed by the metadata management system. Apply this policy statement when recording: 1) an authorized access point in a bibliographic record, 2) an authorized access point for a related entity in an authority record, or 3) a structured value that is not functioning as an access point. If the metadata management system does not permit recording a relationship label for the element, omit it.
