extent of manifestation
Definition and Scope
A number and type of unit or subunit of a manifestation.
PrerecordingA unit includes a volume, audiocassette, film reel, a map, a digital file, etc. A subunit includes a page of a volume, a frame of a microfiche, a record in a digital file, etc. Record a duration (i.e., playing time, running time, performance time, etc.) as an Expression: duration. |
NLNZ PSNLNZ does not consider a map to be a unit of extent of manifestation. Serial works: Do not record this element. |
Recording |
NLNZ PSRecord as: unstructured description; structured description. See NLNZ guidance. Use options on this element page to determine the appropriate numbers, units and subunits to include in the final value, then go to NLNZ SES for string encoding scheme instructions. Early printed resources; Special printed resources: Apply the options for this element with DCRM; however, do not use abbreviations or square brackets. |
Recording a unstructured descriptionRecord a number of units and a term for each kind of unit that comprises a manifestation. |
|
CONDITION None of the terms in a vocabulary encoding scheme is appropriate or sufficiently specific. |
NLNZ PSApply. Consult a team leader on potential inclusion of the term in the appropriate NLNZ VES. |
Recording a structured description |
|
Record a number of units and a term for each kind of unit that comprises a manifestation. |
NLNZ PSRecord numbers of units and a term for each kind of unit by following options on this page. Use a singular or plural form as appropriate. Where adjacent sequences of units describe the same kind of unit, do not repeat the term for the kind of unit. Where the unit for the manifestation is online resource, always omit the subunits from the value of Extent of manifestation. Record the number of units only. Record numbers of subunits and a term for each kind of subunit by following options on this page. Use a singular or plural form as appropriate. Where adjacent sequences of subunits describe the same kind of subunit within a single unit, do not repeat the term for the kind of subunit. Select relevant terms from the NLNZ VES: Extent of manifestation: unit and NLNZ VES: Extent of manifestation: subunit. Do not record terms for items of little bibliographic significance. See definition of "items of little bibliographic significance" in NLNZ guidance. |
CONDITION A manifestation consists of two or more carrier types. |

Extent of manifestations of textFor a printed or manuscript manifestation consisting of text (with or without illustrative content), record an extent by applying the following instructions. Also apply the Extent of manifestations of text instructions to subunits in an atlas or in a manifestation consisting of notated music. |
NLNZ PSSingle unit manifestations: where the unit for the manifestation is volume, always omit the unit from the value of Extent of manifestation unless instructed otherwise. See NLNZ guidance for examples. |
