Policy Statements for Chapter 3: Describing Carriers
LC-PCC PS for 3.1.4
RESOURCES CONSISTING OF MORE THAN ONE CARRIER TYPE
More Than One Carrier Type
LC practice: For resources consisting of more than one carrier type (known as "kits" or "multimedia items" in AACR2), treat one component as the predominant component and the other component(s) as accompanying material.
Accompanying Material
LC practice/PCC practice: When describing the carriers of accompanying material, follow one of the approaches outlined below. Apply these guidelines even when the accompanying material is of the same carrier type as the main part.
1.
If a detailed description of the carrier characteristics of the accompanying material is desired, record the extent (see RDA 3.4), and other characteristics applicable to the accompanying material (see RDA 3.53.19). Provide this information as either:
a)
a separate additional MARC field 300 in the bibliographic record

EXAMPLE

300 ##$a [carrier information for main part]
300 ##$a 1 map : $b color ; $c 25 x 35 cm

or
b)
an accompanying material subfield ($e) added to MARC field 300 of the main part

EXAMPLE

300 ##$a [carrier information for main part] + $e 2 audio discs (digital ; 4 3/4 in.)

2.
If a detailed description of the carrier characteristics of the accompanying material is not necessary, record the extent (only) as either:
a)
a separate additional MARC field 300 in the bibliographic record

EXAMPLE

300 ##$a [carrier information for main part]
300 ##$a 1 map

or
b)
an accompanying material subfield ($e) added to MARC field 300 of the main part

EXAMPLE

300 ##$a [carrier information for main part] + $e 1 USB flash drive

3.
If the accompanying material is of little bibliographic importance, or a description of the carrier itself is not desired, consider giving a note to mention any details about the extent of the accompanying material (see RDA 3.21.2) or the content of the accompanying material (see RDA 7.16), if considered important.

CARRIER TYPE
LC practice/PCC practice for Core element: Always record the carrier type in the MARC field 338. For some resource types, MARC 007 field(s) will also be required, including the Specific Material Designation (MARC field 007/01) for resources other than textual monographs and serials.
[2015-01]
LC-PCC PS for 3.4
EXTENT
Serials and Integrating Resources
LC practice/PCC practice for Core element: For serials and integrating resources, both the number of units and the term indicating the type of unit are required for a completed or "dead" resource (in any format) for which the total extent is known. Only the term indicating the type of unit is required for a currently-published tangible non-print resource (e.g., computer discs), for a currently-published integrating resource, or for a completed or "dead" resource (in any format) for which the total extent is not known. Extent is not required in all other cases.
Online Resources
LC practice/PCC practice for Core element: For online resources, record extent as “1 online resource” followed by either pagination (for textual materials) or format-specific terminology when applicable (e.g., vocal score, videodisc, slide, atlas). Record the subunits only if readily ascertainable and considered important for identification.

EXAMPLE

300 ##$a 1 online resource (1 vocal score (28 pages))

Rare Materials
PCC practice for Core element: For rare materials, apply Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM) conventions when recording extent; however, do not use abbreviations.

If the carrier type varies from one issue or part to another, do not create a new description; make a note about the variation.
[2014-02]
LC-PCC PS for 3.22.1.3
MAKING NOTES ON ITEM-SPECIFIC CARRIER CHARACTERISTICS
LC practice: Routinely make notes on any special features or imperfections of the copy/item being described. Carefully distinguish between such item-specific notes and other kinds of notes that record information valid for all items in a manifestation. Introduce item-specific notes with the phrase "LC copy ..." or "LC set ..." or "LC has ..." as appropriate. Add "DLC" in subfield $5 at the end of the applicable MARC field without any ending punctuation. Follow this practice for serials or integrating resources when it would be beneficial to communicate the local information universally, but use MARC field 590 in the ILS when the local information is truly related to a peculiarity or imperfection of LC's holdings that would not be of interest universally.

EXAMPLE

500 ##$a LC copy imperfect: all after leaf 44 wanting. $5 DLC

500 ##$a LC set incomplete: volume 12 wanting. $5 DLC

500 ##$a LC has 24 parts. $5 DLC
Item as issued has more than 24 parts

500 ##$a LC set lacks slides 7-9. $5 DLC

500 ##$a LC has volumes 1, 3-5, and 7 only. $5 DLC
